According to researchers’ analysis from over 135 studies, just like sleep deprivation oversleeping is also associated with increased health risks, such as heart diseases, diabetes, obesity and stroke. It also increases the risk of dying at an early age.
Another research also emphasized how oversleeping on bad a mattress can lead to poor health. It showed that sleeping on bad quality mattresses for more than 10 hours a day may cause metabolic syndrome. Metabolic syndrome is a health risk where you have at least three health conditions together. Some of these health conditions are the following:
- High blood sugar
- High blood pressure
- Low HDL level
- High triglycerides
Even men and women who sleep on quality mattresses for more than 10 hours are likely to have metabolic syndrome and higher triglycerides compared to people who have healthy six to eight-hour sleep.
Oversleeping Linked To Diseases
There are many ways how oversleeping could potentially be associated with health risk factors or diseases. According to Swedish researchers at Uppsala University, oversleeping for long hours may:
- Occur with poor dietary choices and sedentary lifestyle. And, both these are found common in over-sleepers.
- Be an indicator of poor sleep quality. This means you’re missing out big time on sleep restorative advantages.
- Indicate mismatch between external and internal cues. This mismatch is linked directly to certain health conditions like diabetes, heart diseases, etc.
Note: No matter how much mattress price you pay for a comfortable sleep, sleeping too much will only cause health issues. In some cases, oversleeping may be an early indicator of potential health risks. Therefore, you need to be careful and take all preventive actions on time – before the problem gets too serious.
Your Sleep Duration
How to differentiate between less sleep and oversleep? Well, to answer this question, studies have proven that sleep duration has a U-shaped relationship with health risks, such as cardiovascular diseases, Type II diabetes, etc. And all these health risks may lead to death if fatal. In other words, the extremes of sleep – either very little or very long sleep – are not good for your health. Therefore, you need to be in the middle, around seven to eight hours of sleep every night.
Sleeping too much or too little daily is certainly not good for health, as it’s linked to many health problems. So, if you are concerned that you are not getting a good amount of sleep, you need to consult your health specialist to take care of the situation.
